The Memory of a faithful Life speaks more eloquently than Words!
The Louisiana Roots:
Mr. Edward Charles Lewis lived a life of dedicated service, embodying the
essence of John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you.”
Edward's earthly journey began on May 8, 1953, and concluded on April 23,
2024. He was born to the late Mary Lewis Green and the late James Sims, and
was raised by his stepfather, the late Bennie Dodson Green.
From an early age, Edward embraced Christ as the guiding force in his life,
becoming an integral part of the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Downsville,
Louisiana, under the leadership of the late Reverend G. B. Dunn. He served as
the church pianist and choir leader, leaving an indelible mark on the congregation.
Edward attended school at Eastside High School in Farmerville, Louisiana.
While there, he served as Vice President of his Sophomore Class. During a pivotal
time of school integration, he graduated from Downsville High, May, 1971.
Edward's family was his constant wellspring of inspiration and drive.
Witnessing his Aunt Doris commuting between Downsville, LA, and Grambling
College where she worked, solidified his decision to attend Grambling State.
During his initial semesters, he made the daily journey with her, fueling his
commitment to education and family ties.
He furthered his studies at Grambling College, majoring in Business
Management. One of the highlights of his college experience was participating in
an exchange program at Stevens Point University in Wisconsin. He graduated
with his Bachelor of Science degree in 1974 now known as Grambling State
University. After graduation, Edward was employed with the Wyatt Cafeteria as an
Assistant Manager in Monroe, Louisiana, where he was later transferred to
Longview, Texas in 1977.
His Life Journey in Longview, Texas
This is where Edward began his everlasting love of 44 years with Rhonda
Jackson. She was keeping it groovy on the dance floor at Mr. J's and caught
Edward's attention. With the help of mutual friends, Edward approached Rhonda
and captured her heart forever. Within this love story, a beautiful and smart young
lady was born, "Chandalyn".
Edward, affectionately known as the "Insurance Man", worked as an
insurance agent under the leadership of the late Clarence Bailey. He later worked
in the local school districts where he resided until his health failed him.
Edward united with the Galilee Baptist Church, Inc., Longview, Texas under
the pastorage of Rev. J. B. Dunlap. He was a faithful member of the Male Chorus
and the Mass Choir. Edward served as President of the Male Chorus and
Brotherhood Department. One of his favorite songs that he led was “We’re
Crossing Over...One by One”. He was also a member of the Men’s Sunday
School class. Edward and Rhonda were the first wedded couple at Galilee under
Rev. Dunlap. As Edward served in the church, he also served in the community as
a member of the NAACP.
Edward “LOVED” to dance. He found great joy when attending line dance
classes at the Broughton Recreation Center. He would get on the dance floor and
dance, even if he could not remember all of the steps. He also enjoyed playing
Spades and fellowshipping with his friends at the various locations on
weekends/holidays.
Edward was a proud and committed member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity,
Inc., Mu Rho Lambda Chapter. He served as the chairperson for the Miss Black
and Gold for several years. He loved being the high seller of the delicious
"briskets" during this fundraiser. He loved that "black and gold."
Edward was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, Reverend
Bernard and Maeola Lewis, Aunt Doris L. Taylor, Uncles, L.H. Lewis, L.E. Lewis,
and Levorn Lewis.
Edward’s memories will live forever in the lives of his devoted wife: Rhonda
