On December 4, 1959 Velma Jean Johnson was born in Longview, Texas to her parents, Osborne Johnson, Sr. and Mable Darden Johnson, who preceded her in death. Velma Johnson grew up and attended the Longview Public Schools and graduated from Longview High School in 1978. She also attended Kilgore College and received her Associate Degree in Business Administration.
Velma Johnson completed 44 years of service with Good Shepherd hospital food services department. She began her career at 19 years old as a dish washer, and quickly moved her way up to Administrative Assistant, the position she filled for most of her years. She was a true asset to the department as a dependable employee, completing any task asked of her. Any employee would describe Velma as the glue of the food service team, as she took time to get to know each person, say hello each morning to all, ask about their families and pets, and offer a helping hand. Her sense of humor and unmatched energy always brought an immediate smile to everyone around her. Velma was a great communicator and made connections with many throughout her tenure as an employee at Good Shepherd. All of these wonderful qualities will make her irreplaceable and sorely missed by all who knew her.
At a young age she became a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church and later moved to Bethel Temple of Longview where she was filled with the Holy Ghost in 1983. She became a dependable fixture in the Voices of Bethel Choir, which was the soul and heart of who she was. She loved singing in the choir. Velma took her gift of singing to the Longview jail leading praise and worship time during jail ministry. In 2012 Velma Johnson joined Mount Zion Baptist Church in Douglassville, Texas where Elder Rickey Greene, Sr. is the pastor, she continued to serve using her singing gift. While she functioned in her church, she also took part in Safe Haven Outreach Ministries where she served as the Financial Secretary for all of Safe Haven Outreach's Ministries. She was the worship leader at the Juvenile Attention Center every first Sunday, a Minister in the Designed for Virtue Woman's Discipleship Program, a part of the Prophetic School of Ministry, she was the Women's Retreat Coordinator, Administrative Assistant, helping with "I am Team Jesus Youth Camp", and praise team leader for the first Sunday Service. Velma Johnson was faithful to her ministry until God called her home.
Velma had five sisters, Cozie R. Johnson, Viola M. Hatcher, Virginia M. Brown, Patsy A. Johnson and Louise Johnson; and three brothers, Willie L. Johnson, Osborne Johnson, Jr. and Moses C. Johnson who also preceded her in death.
She leaves to cherish her memories one brother, Kenneth E, Johnson of Diana, Texas; special children, Roger Brown of Garland, Texas and Kimberly Brown of Longview, Texas; and a host of other nieces and nephews.
