Obituary of Mrs. Verna Mae Butler-Warren
April 29, 1946 – May 26, 2026
"To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord."
— 2 Corinthians 5:8
With profound love and heartfelt sorrow, we celebrate the life and legacy of Mrs. Verna Mae Butler-Warren, who peacefully transitioned from labor to reward on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at the age of 80.
Verna Mae Butler-Warren was born on April 29, 1946, in Kildare, Texas, to the late Bennie Patton and Arvelia Butler. She was lovingly raised by her adopted father, the late Tilmer Butler, Sr. Throughout her life, Verna exemplified faith, compassion, perseverance, and a deep commitment to serving God and others.
She was the eldest of four children and was preceded in death by her siblings, Linda Butler-Lewis and Tilmer Butler, Jr. She leaves to cherish her memory her brother Robert Warren of Atlanta Texas, and her beloved baby sister, Ruby Myers of Pearland, Texas, with whom she shared a special bond and companionship during her later years.
Verna graduated from Fairview High School as a member of the Class of 1965 and continued her education at Texarkana Junior College, where she majored in American History. In 1966, she married the late Reverend Vernon Ray Warren and relocated to Pontiac, Michigan. From this union, one daughter was born, Angela Warren of Richmond, Texas, who remained the pride and joy of her life.
In 1975, Verna moved to Houston, Texas, where she united with Bethel Institutional Missionary Baptist Church. She faithfully served under the leadership of the late Reverend Melrose Alpha Nimmo and later Reverend Dwain F. Turner. During her years of membership, she actively participated in the Lois Circle and the Mass Choir under the direction of the late Marshall York, Sr. and Reverend Lee Blue. Her love for God and dedication to her church family were evident through her faithful service and unwavering commitment to helping others.
One of Verna's greatest passions was serving those in need. She found great joy in feeding the homeless in downtown Houston and extending kindness wherever she could. She was also known for her delicious sweet potato pies and famous potato salad, which became treasured staples at family gatherings, church fellowships, and community events.
Professionally, Verna worked for Sakowitz, a prestigious Houston department store, where she served as a Financial Auditor for fifteen years until the company closed. Determined to continue advancing her career, she attended Bryan Career College while working full-time and earned certification as a Medical Assistant and Phlebotomist. Upon graduation, she joined The Woman's Hospital System in Houston's Texas Medical Center, where she faithfully served for seventeen years before returning home in 2007 to care for her beloved mother.
After returning to Kildare, Texas, Verna reunited with her childhood church home, St. John Divine Missionary Baptist Church. She faithfully served under the leadership of the late Reverend Mitchell and later Pastor Murray. Her warm spirit, genuine kindness, and steadfast faith made her a beloved member of the congregation. She served faithfully in the Choir and on the Usher Board while continuing her lifelong commitment to Christian service.
Desiring to further advance God's Kingdom and reach others through ministry, Verna became actively involved with the Unity District Missionary Baptist Association. Throughout her years of service, she held several leadership positions, including Assistant Director of District Number One, Women's Auxiliary Officer, and Assistant Dean of the Mission School. Her dedication to ministry and community outreach touched countless lives throughout the region.
Her desire to grow spiritually and deepen her knowledge of God's Word never diminished. At the age of 72, she achieved a lifelong goal by earning an Associate Degree in Christian Education from Good Shepherd Theological Seminary in Rodessa, Louisiana, demonstrating that learning and spiritual growth have no age limit.
During her twenty-one years as a resident of Cass County, Verna was employed by several organizations, including CHRISTUS St. Michael Hospital in Atlanta, Texas; Linden Municipal Hospital; the Atlanta Public Library; Texas Health and Human Services; and finally the Atlanta Independent School District. Among all her professional accomplishments, she especially cherished working with students with special needs. She loved each child dearly and served them with extraordinary patience, compassion, understanding, and care.
Above all else, Verna loved her family. She was a devoted and loving mother to her daughter, Angela Warren. Her legacy of faith, strength, perseverance, kindness, and unconditional love will continue to live on through the many lives she touched and inspired.
She shared a special bond with her nieces and nephews and held a particularly special place in her heart for Osborn Howard, Wynda Thompson, Anthony Guillory, Rodney Hopes, Roderick Hopes, Faye Hopes, and Latres Watson.
Verna deeply loved her favorite aunt, Mrs. Dixie Mitchell of Seattle, Washington, and cherished the memory of her beloved uncle, the late Luster Mitchell.
She also leaves cherished memories with her special brother-in-law, Charlie Peters; her dear friends, Joe Alice Scott and Ruth Charles; and her special sister in Christ, Betty Wilkerson-Jarmon.
Verna will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her family, friends, church family, former coworkers, students, and all who were blessed to know and love her.
While our hearts are heavy with sorrow, we rejoice in knowing that she now rests peacefully in the loving arms of our Heavenly Father. We find comfort in God's promise that one day we shall meet again.
"Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure. She is loved beyond words and missed beyond measure."
May her beautiful memory continue to be a source of comfort, strength, and inspiration to all whose lives she touched.
